Matthew at the piano

Matthew · New York City

Hi! I'm Matthew — a professional pianist based in New York City with a diverse musical range that spans classical, jazz, stride, ragtime, blues, Broadway, contemporary, film, television, and video game music. I've performed at jazz clubs, hotels, churches, weddings, cocktail hours, senior living communities, and private events in NYC and around the world.

My musical journey was self-directed from the start. I first learned piano as a kid playing a video game (The Miracle Piano Teaching System) using a 49-key MIDI keyboard connected to my dad's PC, before I was reluctantly enrolled in lessons for one year with a local teacher that nearly made me quit piano for good. I did quit lessons for good, but not the piano.

After quitting piano lessons, I miraculously managed to carve out even more time at the piano — this time entirely on my own terms, teaching myself increasingly difficult works by everyone from J.S. Bach to Scott Joplin to Alan Menken to Koji Kondo. That unrelenting desire to continually challenge myself eventually earned me a Minor in Piano Performance from the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music, where I furthered my classical and jazz studies and discovered my passion for performing and connecting with others.

To this day, I can still play piano for hours on end (just ask my wife!), and will happily sit down at just about any piano I come across.

You can watch and listen to my piano playing here.

What I offer

Music for every moment

Solo piano for any occasion

I possess a vast and eclectic musical repertoire, and have performed at numerous locations & events around the world: jazz clubs, hotels, cafés, churches, weddings, ballet classes, cocktail hours, parties, and more. I have the ability to play by ear, sight-read (scores and chords), and improvise. I'm more than happy to infuse your space with the right blend of musical energy, whether it's a swinging medley of jazz standards or quiet classical backdrop replete with nocturnes and slow waltzes.

Community & enrichment | live music

Resident piano programs

Five years ago, a spontaneous conversation I had in the lobby of a beautiful senior living center in Manhattan, NYC turned into a weekly residency that I always look forward to. I love bringing the joy of live music from the Great American Songbook, show tunes, piano rags, and classical repertoire to residents (who often sing along and even dance!). I would be delighted to share this experience with your community.

Piano accompaniment

I spent years playing at jazz jam sessions in Manhattan, accompanying singers and instrumentalists across various styles & tempos. Performing with other musicians taught me the importance of listening attentively, and the joys of being so present with them that accompanying feels more like a balanced dialogue than a competition. Ballet accompaniment is the creative domain I'm most excited to explore right now - though I'm eager for other creative collaborations that requires a versatile pianist!
